Year 6 Spring Term 1 & 2
In Maths we will be:
- Developing our knowledge of measurements including: conversion of miles and kilometres, calculating the area of triangles and parallelograms, looking at the relationship between area and perimeter, calculating the volume of cubes and cuboids and using formulae to do this
- Investigating the properties of shape: comparing and classifying shapes based on their properties, naming parts of a circle, recognising angles and finding missing angles and recognising and describing 3D shapes
- Looking at ratio and proportion
- Using statistics – particularly pie charts and line graphs and calculating the mean as an average
- Regular problem solving and reasoning activities with regards to all of the above
In English we will be:
- Writing discussion texts and persuasive texts
- Looking at Myths and Legends from Asia and writing our own
- Regularly visiting areas of grammar, punctuation and spelling to supports revision for SATs
In Science, we will be:
Associating the brightness of a lamp or the volume of a buzzer with the number and voltage of cells used in the circuit; comparing and give reasons for variations in how components function, including the brightness of bulbs, the loudness of buzzers and the on/off position of switches; using recognised symbols when representing a simple circuit in a diagram.
Art & Design
In Art, we will be:
Improving their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials.
In Computing, we will be:
Using sequence, selection, and repetition in programs; work with variables and various forms of input and output; using search technologies effectively, appreciate how results are selected and ranked, and be discerning in evaluating digital content; selecting, using and combining a variety of software (including internet services) on a range of digital devices to design and create a range of programs, systems and content that accomplish given goals, including collecting, analysing, evaluating and presenting data and information; using technology safely, respectfully and responsibly; recognise acceptable/unacceptable behaviour; identify a range of ways to report concerns about content and contact.

In French, we will be:
Engaging in conversations; ask and answer questions; express opinions and respond to those of others; seek clarification and help; speaking in sentences, using familiar vocabulary, phrases and basic language structures.
In Geography, we will be:
Using maps, atlases, globes and digital/computer mapping to locate countries and describe features studied; identifying the position and significance of latitude, longitude, Equator, Northern Hemisphere, Southern Hemisphere, the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, Arctic and Antarctic Circle, the Prime/Greenwich Meridian and time zones (including day and night); describing and understanding key aspects of human geography, including: types of settlement and land use, economic activity including trade links, and the distribution of natural resources including energy, food, minerals and water.
In History, we will be:
Looking at the achievements of the earliest civilizations – an overview of where and when the first civilizations appeared and a depth study of The Shang Dynasty of Ancient China.
In Music, we will be:
Appreciating and understanding a wide range of high-quality live and recorded music drawn from different traditions and from great composers and musicians; developing an understanding of the history of music.
Physical Education (PE)
In PE, we will:
Perform dances using a range of movement patterns. Play competitive games, modified where appropriate [for example, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders and tennis], and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending.
