Let's Get Growing


We’ll be spending a lot of time in the poly-tunnel and planting and growing things around the school grounds


In Maths, we will be:

  • Learning to tell the time in five minute intervals
  • Looking at unit and non-unit fractions
  • Making a whole from different starting fractions
  • Calculating in tenths
  • Ordering fractions on a number line
  • Converting tenths to decimals
  • Finding fractions on an amount



In English, we will be:

  • Reading ‘The Tin Forest’
  • Reading aloud
  • Looking at poetry
  • Descriptive writing
  • Planning and performing
  • Creating book trailers


In Science, we will:

  • identify and name a variety of common wild and garden plants, including deciduous and evergreen trees
  • identify and describe the basic structure of a variety of common flowering plants, including trees.
  • asking relevant questions and using different types of scientific enquiries to answer them
  • setting up simple practical enquiries, comparative and fair tests
  • making systematic and careful observations and, where appropriate, taking accurate measurements using standard units, using a range of equipment, including thermometers and data loggers

Art & Design

In Art, we will learn:

  • Looking at the works of David Hockney
  • Learning to improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials [for example, pencil, charcoal, paint, clay]


In Computing, we will:

  • design, write and debug programs that accomplish specific goals, including controlling or simulating physical systems; solve problems by decomposing them into smaller parts
  • use sequence, selection, and repetition in programs; work with variables and various forms of input and output

Design and Technology

In Design and Technology, we will be:

  • finding alternatives to plastic packaging.
  • select from and use a wider range of materials and components, including construction materials, textiles and ingredients, according to their functional properties and aesthetic qualities


In French, we will be:

Engaging in conversations; ask and answer questions; express opinions and respond to those of others; seek clarification and help; speaking in sentences, using familiar vocabulary, phrases and basic language structures.


Geography is not covered in this topic


In History, we will be learning about:

  • the achievements of the earliest civilizations – an overview of where and when the first civilizations appeared and a depth study of one of the following: Ancient Sumer; The Indus Valley; Ancient Egypt; The Shang Dynasty of Ancient Chin


Music is not covered in this topic

Physical Education (PE)

In PE, we will:

  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
  • use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
  • develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance [for example, through athletics and gymnastics]

  • Researching a religious belief or religion
